Looking for a British Columbia resident interested in late spring/early summer employment doing stickleback field work on Vancouver Island, as the pandemic continues to restrict our ability to to field work travel. Please rt

It is really disturbing to see the pundits accusing and other scientist of "undermining confidence" in BC's response to COVID. It's not just one account - it's several and the messaging seems coordinated. The point of science isn't to toe a party line.

We are extremely lucky to have here in BC, who is a total powerhouse doing world-class research and finds time to build models tuned to BC and Canada data advising BC and PHAC. We need more not fewer scientists bringing their deep expertise to policy questions.

Great work looking at impact of different vaccine strategies on mortality and morbidity in the BC context. It shows that after immunizing 80+ year olds it’s best to switch to essential workers first rather than go down the age ladder.

Correct, nor B.1.525, which doesn’t have N501Y, which is what is targeted here in BC. Would catch B.1.1.7, P1, B.1.351. Unclear still which have a strong transmission advantage as B.1.1.7??

I haven’t heard about WGS finding VOC that the SNP assay hasn’t...but I don’t know the details

At the moment, we’re just getting numbers in the news updates (no sample dates, locations, travel history, etc.). I hope more VOC data will be made available for downloading so we can better model COVID case numbers!

Great to hear that BC is now typing 70% of cases for Variants of Concern and able to get that information back out one day later! Plus aim to ramp this up (100% typing of tested cases). This is what we need to isolate VOC & prevent them from establishing.

Vaccines appear to lower transmission rates: the early calculations from (Moderna) are broadly consistent with latest analysis of data from Israel (Pfizer). Major reduction (89%) in infection, not just symptomatic cases!

We found a sexual conflict gene!! Alleles of Puf60b have opposing effects on survival in wild guppies. Genotype frequencies and survival (females in red, males in blue, expected in grey) are mind-blowing! Amazing work led by just out

Do you find yourself in need of aligning 500k very similar sequences on a laptop? We (mostly ) developed a reference aligner 'nextalign' that aligns 500k sequences in 30min using 8 cores and just a few GB of RAM.

Additionally, one case of a new Variant-of-(Maybe)Concern was found in BC, B.1.525, which has been flagged as having a similar set of genetic mutations. There is no clear evidence about whether it transmits more, but scientists are keeping an eye out.

On the positive side: Dr. Bonnie Henry reported that a point prevalence test in BC found only 3 variants of concern (2 B.1.1.7 & 1 B.1.351) out of all 3099 positive samples from Jan30-Feb5, indicating that we do not yet have establishment and exponential growth in BC.
