Today we're getting a look inside the lab of Tiffany Horng, thanks to @kentlangston, a PhD student at the School. Researchers in the lab study how nutrient metabolism controls immune cell function. In this video, magnetic beads are being used to capture antibody-tagged histones (the proteins around which DNA is wrapped). This will later help scientists understand how metabolism is altering the architecture of chromatin (a macromolecule consisting of DNA, RNA, and proteins) at specific immune response genes. #HarvardChan #Harvard #publichealth #biology

"Forget calories, focus on food quality, and let your body do the rest." That's the simple advice from David Ludwig for people who have resolved to lose weight in 2017. Cutting back on calories, the time-honored approach to weight loss, will work for the short term, Ludwig says, but our body's biology means that only a small fraction of people can keep weight off through calorie restriction. Congratulations to Christalyn Rhodes, who is one of eight @harvard students to be named a Horizons Scholar! Rhodes, a Ph.D. student in Biological Sciences in Public Health, has been studying the intersection of physics and biology, with a particular focus on asthma. The Horizons Scholar award recognizes doctoral students whose work has the potential to reshape their disciplines.
