The history of science is great. You can feel like an imposter in several disciplines at once.

There are more bullet trains in this picture (of the station in Wuhan China) than there are bullet trains in the entire United States!

Happy Labor Day! Every Monday I compile a round-up of the books and journal articles I read this week, along with a selection of pieces I liked from across the web. Here's my list from this week:

With archival stuff (like everything) it works best if you process the docs. I use Scan Tailor for that. I archive the images I took in the archives, and use ST to split, crop, deskew/dewarp the images. Where it makes sense, I also make them b/w.

I index basically everything with it. My archival pdfs, website mirrors, newsgroup archives, and my zotero library.

It's kinda buggy, so I wouldn't recommend it to a typical user, but Open Semantic Search blows nearly everything else out of the water. I've been using it for about 3 years, and it makes working with large corpora so much easier.

History of science folks, can anyone point me toward the literature on self experimentation?

The bosses thought they were tricking us by giving us a Labor Day in September instead of May. But we just took it as an opportunity to celebrate workers twice a year. Happy Labor Day, y'all! We will win!

I had been in a few other orgs over the years and my burnout had finally ebbed. I was excited by the DSA's momentum and it seemed like a natural compliment to the union work I was doing.

If Twitter is anything to go by, Q&A culture at political science conferences seems...bad.

One surprisingly easy way to lose followers on this site is to merely remind people that the architects and salesmen of a bad, criminal war are themselves bad criminals.
