You can just...lay someone off without telling them? This seems like maybe not the best thing to do to a human being.

Also, how is that video not more than four minutes long?!

Oh, so you're saying a James Franco-produced project about the adventures of a teenage prostitute is unpalatable in "today's climate"? Oh, what a terrible shame.

My advice to ? 1. De-emphasize algorithmic discovery 2. Emphasize (and support) the sub feed 3. Find metrics that indicate deeper connection with content and reward those 4. Make positive user experience (rather than just lengthy user experience) the ultimate goal.

Platforms need to be aware of this, because it's entirely possible to force us to create content that gets short-term attention but ends up creating long-term resentment and poisons the culture of the platform.

YouTube (and, really, all of these platforms) aren't just hacking viewer's attention by showing them things that will keep them watching, they're hacking creators to get them to create exactly the kind of content that fulfills the platform's goals.

But creators /can/ do it, and more importantly they /will/. Many will do whatever it takes to get pushed to a larger audience...and we'll all do /some/ things we aren't necessarily proud of.

And what decides whether a video gets pushed is click rates and watch time, so you need to make a video that people will watch with a thumbnail and title that people will click on. That is not something a computer program can do, it's an extremely advanced task.

(Thank you, btw, to people who still use their sub feed...you mean everything to creators.)

Because most YouTube users no longer use their subscription feed, YouTube's algorithm is what decides whether a video is going to get viewed. Your audience literally won't see it unless the algorithm decides to show it to be people.

Hey , I've been thinking about your video a lot. This one: and I want to say a thing to and YouTubers about the feedback loop of attention grabbing.
