Oh yeah, I failed to replicate two different famous effects before the replication crisis was really broadly discussed. Tried to meet with a couple of faculty with expertise in the topics and they dismissively said "come back when you have findings"

Best thread of the week: applying machine learning to a large corpus of state-level legislation to pinpoint the influence of lobbies and special interest groups. Outstanding work.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in. I am of course well aware of pre-registration, preprints, collaborative notebooks: all great solutions but for the initiated. I still struggle to find an answer to the early discoverability problem, which seems to be more cultural than technical.

He asked me a very reasonable, practical question on how people in other fields discover and coordinate a network of labs to join forces and publish their (independently produced) negative results. I honestly told him I don’t know the answer, and I am not sure there’s a good one.

His main worry is that many of his talented PhD students will be driven away from science because of how the system is designed. He had a perfectly accurate, hands-on diagnosis of the problem many young researchers face. Had never heard of .

I met today one of my best professors from cogsci grad school. He says one of his PhD students has tried and failed to reproduce a famous effect in the literature. In the process they discovered 5-6 other labs have failed to. None of these negative results is published.

Reached a point where my brain is starting to pick up and automatically label bird songs I hear when I walk in the street or in the park (“House Finch”, “Townsend’s Warbler”, White-Crowned Sparrow”, “Dark-Eyed Junco”). It’s a startling experience, it puts a huge smile on my face.
