    In the digital media context, state messaging necessarily adapts — it must be carried along on text messages and likes, passed along by social media influencers, genuine supporters, and paid commentators alike. It is in some ways a manufactured fandom.

    Václav Havel’s Power of the Powerless talked about the media of “post-totalitarianism” as posters on walls and streets and acceptance of state messages at different levels of the bureaucracy. The point was to create the illusion of consensus to the aims of the system.
