    The attack on Section 230 -- the law that did more to make the Internet valuable to all of us than any other -- is growing louder every day, and sad to say, some of our best journalists are on the case. This will end badly for freedom of speech.

    Sad news that Bob Bernstein died today. Bob was a great fighter for freedom of expression, Soviet dissidents, and founded Helsinki Watch which became . Creative & talented publisher, we’ll miss his unique voice on &fairness.

    i asked b/c (1) facebook at least *nominally* operates according to rules, even if highly discretionary, & (2) the public debate seems to assume the importance of transparent rules applied consistently.

    My focus on antisemitism is because it is the oldest form of hatred,likely the most widespread hatred &often the first hatred to raise its ugly head.And one form of hatred is a foundation for other forms of hatred.Have invited all govts to contribute to identifying good practice.

    Predictably reporting of UK all abt triumph of but BBC shows underlying result: 40% of voters support explicitly anti-Brexit parties, 35% pro-Brexit. Yet politicians w go on spouting nonsense that ‘the country just wants us to get on with Brexit’

    Journalists complain Facebook won't take down a video which is clearly false but this quickly breaks down. 1. Media in US law doesn't require truth (see Fox News) 2. Why wouldn't this apply to any partisan news video? Free speech incompatible with fighting information warfare

    Unless there is threat to life or serious social harm, the way to fight disinformation AND protect free speech is not to take it down but to and expose it for what it is. In the case of the this is a shoddy distortion by political opponents.

    This exchange is great - distinguished by being both nuanced & careful. I think a wider lesson for governments & societies around the world is that online free speech governance is complex with no easy solutions - all involve trade-offs 👇

    No matter how carefully you craft rules governing online free speech, there will inevitably be over- & under-inclusion. Both human & algorithmic decision-making will always be imperfect. Societies & governments around the world have yet to come to terms with this reality.

    This is such a great thread of thoughtful commentators. Doing it at “scale“ is definitely not a concern. That’s what they developed their technology for. And if they can’t, there needs to be severe sanctions on these platforms. But the freedom of speech thing is very complicated.

    Maybe treat it as "graphic content" and have a warning that appears on the content, whether it's satire, political speech, etc.. But we shouldn't remove it.

    If it were my call, I would have removed the video because it had been weaponized as government propaganda against political opposition. But I also support Facebook's downgrading & Twitter's non-intervention. I favor diverse industry approaches to content moderation

    The problem is not that it’s impossible for people to make judgment calls, but that it’s very difficult, if not impossible, to come up with a simple set of rules an algorithm can follow to make decisions humans will accept as fair.

    It’s obvious in principle. The problem that Facebook, and all the platforms keep coming back to, is that they don’t want to _actually_ be in the business of moderating all, or even most, content. They want to do so at discretion and do so on easy cases. CCM is brand management.

    Transparency is needed. But Facebook as editor of the Internet is a dismal solution, and that's ultimately where this goes.

    Most coverage of fb's Community Standards report has focused on the Fake Accounts no., but inclusion of appeals data is a Big Deal that deserves more attention. Smarter ppl will no doubt dig into it, but something that jumped out: Hate Speech is by far the most appealed category
