    Yesterday was a scorcher! Just think, the spacecraft endured temperatures that were 30x hotter upon reentry into the Earth's atmosphere! Luckily, the heat shield (a sample shown here from our collection), burns up keeping the astronauts safe in the Command Module.

    Astronaut ice cream was developed for the U.S. space program, but probably never made it to . Astronauts don’t eat crumbly food in zero-G because floating crumbs can be dangerous. It is, however, totally safe to enjoy a Neapolitan slice on Earth. Happy

    1969. 9:56 pm CST: Armstrong reaches the footpad of the lunar module, and places his left foot on the surface. "This is one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." The whole world watched as history was made.

    1969. 3:05 pm CST. Having missed their target landing site by about 4 miles, Armstrong takes manual control and bypasses a huge crater and boulder field for a smoother landing area. Aldrin communicates altitude readings.

    1969. 8:27 am CST. Aldrin crawls into the lunar module and starts to power-up the spacecraft. About an hour later, Armstrong enters the lunar module and together they continue to check systems and deploy the landing legs.
