My new essay on information war - “The Digital Maginot Line” - is up. It looks at how we’re still mistakenly treating global influence operations as disparate attacks,& how this may be pushing us toward digital security theater as we fumble for a solution

He failed in SF. I don’t know why anyone would think this is a good idea for NY. Integration is an important goal. Eliminating gifted programs that benefit low income and middle class kids is the absolute wrong approach to get there.

This article is 🤯🤬. Carranza eliminated SF gifted programs. Know what didn’t happen? Integration. Then BoE weakened the math curriculum, eliminating 8th grade algebra. Then they said anyone who pushed back on that policy (electeds, parents) was racist.

The fact that this needs to be made plain...one of those cultural divides between Wall Street and tech.

My version of the canonical tech-person-working-at-laptop shot has a ladybug water bottle in it. 🐞 The issue is great. I love what Offscreen is building.

I did an interview with for the current issue (#21) and they came to my apt to take some photos of my IRL (offscreen!) life. My life is 90% the chaos that comes with 2 young kids, and the photos really captured that. 😂 I’m getting comfortable with chronic mess.

Hyperpartisan echo chambers have already become divergent micro-consensus realities. Some people will never believe that the jerk they love to hate didn’t actually say that thing.

Ironically, culture warriors who’ve spent years decrying journos as ”fake news” may now hope that same press writes articles debunking or decrying *actually fake* things. But it still might not matter.

There have been recent articles suggesting deepfakes dont matter bc shallowfakes work just as well; there’s truth in that. But deepfakes will be fodder for the culture wars...audio passed off as a “secret recording exposed!” A number will hit the right outrage note and go viral.

Just read Jordan Peterson’s blog post on deepfakes. I don’t agree with all of it, but he is right that anyone of any political persuasion who does public work, has a podcast, appears in a lot of videos is likely to be targeted and to potentially experience reputational harm.

The 130k donors criteria is extremely easy to game. It’s a terrible way to decide who’s on a national debate stage. The poll criteria is the check against anyone rich using Tom Steyer’s ad strategy, and against outright fraud. It’s the legitimacy check.

Among the things Rep. Nunes is seeking in discovery for his lawsuit against Twitter - filed after a fake cow was mean to him online - is a list of every phone call Twitter employees placed "to somewhere in Virginia" during the past five years.

I was reading the exceptional 's new book on my ✈️ home, and the cover and title (a🦄on the paperback) were so compelling that the man sitting next to me photographed it so he could buy it upon landing. :) Review here:

There are layers to this onion: review manipulation tactics, FB groups for brokering paid reviews to get crap legitimized with ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️s, the recommendation engine and "you might like" emails, etc. It's remarkable Amazon doesn't get more attention.

A huge % of this is Chinese sellers (marketing materials identical to their Alibaba listings.) Alibaba is perceived as cheap, bad customer experience, buyer beware. So these sellers are "Amazon-washing" their stuff leveraging AMZN's brand & distribution. Amazon has ignored it.

YouTube’s parent company Google just announced it has disabled 210 YouTube channels that were uploading videos about the ongoing protests in Hong Kong. The company said the channels were linked to the Chinese government.

The monkey photo that's all over the hashtag...happy to report that apparently the baby monkey had just fainted. Photo was from India, 2016. What's actually happening in the Amazon? The hashtag is full of misinformation images.

What is going on with this hashtag? Every single photo here is old, some several years old.
