    So much more to this but was stuck on a million calls and now taking off on an transatlantic flight with no WiFi. Good question. Damn. To be continued.

    Rita was the FMB before I came on board. But the notion of that concept was very literal and frankly degrading. I presented the notion of the poster - one designed to make Rita look more human as you moved closer. Watch the progression each time Cage wakes up.

    Ok: How did you land on the idea to make Rita/the Full Metal Bitch a woman instead of creating another male hero? Was that always how you saw that role? (Brilliant movie btw - one of my favorite action SciFi films)

    Here’s a specific example! Where did the general idea of Lane returning in “MI6” come from? Obviously he’s an amazing villain and foil to Ethan. But generally the “MI” villains are one and done. Where did the inspiration of his return come from? Or did you always hope hed return?

    While a literal audience is important, there is a figurative one in my head. I work to stand outside of myself and see true work from someone else’s point of view.

    you’ve mentioned a few times that you learn a lot from the audience? How do you do that? I mean in practical terms. Do you seat in screening rooms to gauge their reactions to scenes? Do you ask them what they thought? Do you read audience reviews? ...?

    A random scene sat in my file for ages with nowhere to go. A few years later, I came up with an ending I liked, but didn’t have a beginning. I put the two scenes together and figured out how to connect them. That was day one of writing The Usual Suspects.

    Sometimes, something about a certain scene makes me feel like it was the first scene the screenwriter imagined before writing the script. Do you have any scenes that made the cut like that?

    As with all things Mission, I’m taking it as it comes, remaining open. There are no rules until you write them.

    Are you planning on experimenting with the two-movie structure with MI7 & MI8? Is it one continuous story over two films or are they two standalone movies?

    To be clear, debt motivates me to write. Generating ideas is another question altogether. Story comes from many places, quite often when I’m not forcing myself to find it. Ask me about a specific example and I can better tell you what inspired me.

    besides debt or financial oblivion, what helps you generate story ideas?

    A war film, a heist film, a thriller, a drama, a meditation on the complicated value of duty, survival, art and human life. A movie I recommend often and one that never misses.

    Watched Frankenheimer’s THE TRAIN on at ’s suggestion. A technical marvel, one of a kind. Some of the best shot design I’ve ever seen. The titles sequence. Actors running for cover with real bombers flying overhead. All of it. Damn.

    At least part of every name in that movie comes from a real person, except Kobayashi - a name chosen completely at random.

    What was the inspiration for the names in ? Bricks Marlin, Redfoot, Kobayashi, Kaiser Soze? any story behind each name?

    The only bad reviews that really hurt are the ones that are right.

    mcQ, how do you feel about the fact that you devote everything to a film and put yourself out there, only for the occasional critic or fan to just write it off with an unsympathetic dismissal?

    Do you believe in auteur theory? Or since you credit the people you work with so much, do you think a film is too collaborative to be one person's vision?

    My work with composers is largely reactive. They bring me ideas and I point out the areas where I’m connecting emotionally. A small motif can evolve into a major theme (see the opening scene of Fallout, for example. recorded it before we even started shooting).

    About soundtracks, how do you put into words the music/feelings you want people to feel so that the composers work it out? Do the final soundtracks fit in with your initial ideas?

    Reading it.

    What’s the worse part of writing a script for you? please don’t say all parts. I’m at the end of a first draft now and I’m hesitating finishing as endings can feel flat and the fear of it all not working looms big.

    A few suggestions: 1) Give them a problem they are wholly unsuited to solve/ambition they cannot hope to achieve. 2) Take that which is most important to them in the first act/scene. 3) Cast Cate Blanchett.
