"What makes you smile when you see this image?" Elizabeth Dale-Deines showed me some of the techniques she uses with students in 's Creating American Stories program, such as starting with a question. For me, it was the vivid colors in "Café" by William H. Johnson.

  3. After exploring Johnson's "Café" and other works, students are invited to write. One student's poem in response to this work was titled "A Mysterious Brunch." Another was "The Lovely Jazz Night." Thank you, students, for sharing your writing with us.

  4. While its flat geometric shapes may not immediately invite closer looking, exploring "Café" with educators reveals intriguing depth. In our programs, students develop skills we all need in 2019: questioning assumptions, seeing multiple perspectives, building empathy.

  5. Johnson's "Café" is one of the artworks Elizabeth and fellow educators use with eighth graders visiting from Washington, D.C., public schools. She prompts them to discuss their reactions and discover how the 1939 image is relevant to their lives today.

Many formerly enslaved people fled to the swampy areas of Ecuador away from white enslavers, where they traveled waterways by canoe. Elderly women made the canoe seats. This one was made by Garza's grandmother. Spot an image of the West African trickster, Anansi the Spider?

I was thrilled to return to Japan recently to speak at the conference. In the 1990s, I was honored to work in Japan as project director of the traveling exhibition "Smithsonian's America," which opened in 1994.

It was the grandest challenge of my life to build and lead , a place that asks audiences to grapple with our history and to live up to our highest ideals. Just as it transformed what a museum could be, I know the Smithsonian is a place to inspire and challenge the nation.
