Watching the UK parliament, hard not to be struck by how robust its democracy seems, w politicians refusing to be enablers but instead putting principle before party, trying to stop a PM who is violating political norms & endangering the country’s future.

  3. Vaguely 19th C feel to this report. Repeal of the Corn Laws and all that. Took the Tories 28 years to recover from that one. via

FT verdict on Boris Johnson’s suspension of parliament: MPs should back a No confidence motion and head for an election. This manoeuvre sets a dangerous precedent and is an affront to constitutional democracy. (Also quotes JS Mill) via

Prepare for a possible election being called next Thursday, 5th September, for 17th October. Those six weeks will be the fight of our lives to take wealth and power back from a greedy, entitled Establishment that looks only after its own - and has brought the country to disaster.

Trump is clearly breaking with Bolton and Pompeo on Iran, taking "regime-change" off the table, cutting down Pompeo's list of demands, and even, weirdly, talking up a line of credit to compensate for the damage his sanctions are causing. But, but, but...

    1. So here’s where we are: Johnson’s authority is made of balsa. He depends upon the taxpayer-purchased votes of the DUP and the support of his own parliamentary party, many of whom want much more than the backstop excised from May’s deal....
