    Five says the advocacy for people with mental illness was especially meaningful to him. He suffered with his own illnesses in solitary after his son, who had a learning disability, wrote him a letter with some backwards letters. DOCCS alleged it was secret gang language.

    Next we hear from Doug Van Zandt, our Capitol Region Organizer, who built the replica cell. His son, Ben, was incarcerated at 17 for behaviors linked to undiagnosed mental illness & tragically committed suicide in solitary after suffering and witnessing extreme abuse.

    Being removed from watch due to "singing with another patient"? Sickening but happens all the time. Often any socialization betw patients housed (in isolation) in crisis observation area is marked as a sign everything is fine & patient is "malingering."
