    The team wants to know more about the effects of the ocean & atmosphere on Helheim Glacier, & how meltwater and are exported into the global ocean. The data obtained this summer & the instruments that remained to continue monitoring will answer these questions.

    Luca Centurioni, a Scripps scientist who studies ocean circulation and develops observational instruments, oversaw deployment of the drifters, which are deployed by helicopter. These are able to get closer to the glacier than the scientists themselves.

    Scripps biological oceanographer Maria Vernet () was part of the expedition, studying structure and function of the fjord. As warmer water moves into the fjord and the glacier slowly breaks up, the team will monitor changes to the environment.
