“Amnesty International challenged the U.S.-Canada ‘safe third country’ agreement in court this month, and we will fight against these unlawful agreements and any attempts to implement them as well.

"People should not be forced to seek safety in places that are anything but safe. U.S. policies cannot continue to punish asylum-seekers who have been forced to flee their homes.

"This rule is potentially the most dangerous and dramatic step yet that the Trump administration has taken to eviscerate the right to seek asylum here, foreclosing all forms of protection for people who fall under the scope of these unlawful agreements.

“The administration has bullied the governments of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras into signing agreements that will be deadly for people seeking asylum and is now carrying out their fatal application.

Responding to a new interim final rule that seeks to implement asylum cooperative agreements between the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, @charanya_k, the advocacy director for the Americas at Amnesty International USA said:

“The time for words is over. It’s well past time to act – elected officials from across the country must finally take a stand to pass common-sense legislation that will help deter these tragedies.”

“Blood from these shootings lies squarely in the hands of Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, who has refused to take any action as children as young as 3 suffer the consequences.

“On the heels of the preventable tragedy in Santa Clarita this week, this country is once again in pain as children bear the brunt of inaction in Congress. For our country’s leaders to continue to fail to take any action on gun violence prevention is damning.

We find ourselves again with a weekend of tragedy. 5 lives lost, a community in mourning and @senatemajldr and Congress still not taking action to prevent senseless gun violence. We need ERPO laws and background checks. Now.
