Thinking about these numbers makes me think of how the dangers COVID-19 in prisons and jails are to the people incarcerated, clearly, but also to those workers with most contact with the incarcerated, of whom Black people make up a higher percentage than they do of the population

So many of the jobs with high percentages of Black workers are ones that make workers vulnerable right now or face uncertainty in the future as a result of COVID-19. Postal workers, correctional officers, bus and taxi drivers are all jobs with a high percentage of Black workers.

Yet NYC's parole officers *continue to send people to jail.* According to city data, 35 people have entered NYC jails on technical violations since 3/27 when Cuomo announced "wherever we can get people out of jails, out of prisons, now, we are.”

In a declaration filed by DHS's Russel Holt in a lawsuit, ICE has so far released 693 people (out of ~ 33,000) as of yesterday. Further, ICE contractors as well as non-ICE detainees (at state/local facilities that also detain ICE detainees) *have died* because of COVID-19.

There are now at least 560 people at Cook County jail who've tested positive for COVID-19 according to the Sheriff. This number includes both people who are detained and work at the jail. And includes those who have recovered & are no longer positive. Details below.
