    Edward exposed how governments and their spy agencies like NSA and GCHQ were developing mass surveillance programs and trying to break, weaken, and attack online privacy around the world. We believe that in a democracy whistleblowers should be celebrated, not arrested.

    The last time we heard a White House considering a pardon was 2016, when the very same Attorney General who once charged me conceded that, on balance, my work in exposing the NSA's unconstitutional system of mass surveillance had been "a public service."

    In May and June 2020 we found and removed a group of Tor exit relays that were messing with exit traffic. They left almost all exit traffic alone, and we don't know whether any users were successfully attacked.

    In 2019, we created a Network Health team dedicated to keeping track of our network. This team, in part, would help us more quickly and comprehensively identify malicious relays. In April 2020 we had to lay off 1/3 of our organization due to the fundraising impacts of COVID-19.

    2. We have contributors watching the network and reporting malicious relays to be rejected by our Directory Authorities. Although our "bad relays" team will respond quickly to such reports, and we reject malicious relays as soon as we discover them, we are still under capacity.

    1. One of the more comprehensive fixes we're exploring from the user side is to disable plain HTTP in Tor Browser. It's still unclear how such a feature would impact the Tor user experience, so we should try it out first at the higher levels of the Tor Security Slider.

    There are two pieces to mitigating this particular attack. The first piece involves steps that users and websites can do to make themselves safer. The second piece is about identifying and protecting against relays that try to undermine the security of the Tor network.

    The attacker intercepted HTTP connections to a small number of cryptocurrency exchange websites. This situation is a good reminder that HTTP requests are unencrypted and unauthenticated, and thus are still prone to attack.

    The Tor Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and every donation made this August goes towards the Tor Bug Smash Fund. We use this fund to find and fix bugs + conduct important maintenance. Help Tor smash all the bugs! 👾

    This year, we expanded the number of Tor relays we host by adding an additional 6 servers, bringing our total relays to 20. These servers can carry approximately 3.5 Gb/s of peak traffic on the Tor network. Up-to-date statistics are available
