  2. Statement: Floyd Little and I were students at Syracuse University together. I was in law school & he was a star halfback on the football team. I watched him play in Archbold Stadium, his number 44 flashing by defenders who had no chance, running as if he was chasing the spirit of his dear friend & fellow 44 legend, Ernie Davis.
In the years that followed, I got to know Floyd as the man behind the number. He was full of character, decency, & integrity. He was always gracious with his time with fans — parents & grandparents who wanted to introduce their children & grandchildren to a genuine role model.
I was one of them. My family got to know Floyd. We’d call each other after Syracuse games and to check in on one another. I remember our call when he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame & the joy in his voice. And I remember the more recent call when he shared his cancer diagnosis, & how fearless he was in his conviction to fight it.

  15. Statement: Fifty years ago today, President Nixon signed the Occupational Safety and Health Act to assure safe & healthy working conditions for workers across the country. For five decades, the hardworking civil servants at the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) in the Department of Labor have fought to uphold that mission & protect workers’ lives, including workers responding to some of the nation’s devastating crises — from the recovery of the World Trade Center in the aftermath of 9/11 to the cleanup of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. And, OSHA has protected workers from everyday hazards in the workplace — limiting workplace exposure to hazardous chemicals including lead, asbestos, & silica & instituting standards that require hospitals to safely dispose of needles & other sharp objects — dramatically reducing infection rates of health care workers. Yet today, in the midst of a global pandemic, OSHA has been prevented from using its full range of tools to protect
workers from COVID-19. The number of OSHA inspectors is at its lowest level since 1975, while millions of essential workers are working to keep the country functioning through the pandemic. As they risk their lives to save others in this pandemic, they should not have to lie awake at night wondering if they’ll make it home from work safely the next day, or if they’ll bring home the virus to their loved ones. My administration will ask OSHA to determine whether to establish an emergency temporary standard to keep workers safe from COVID-19. I will direct OSHA to enforce worker safety requirements, target the worst violators, and work to increase the number of OSHA inspectors to get the job done. & I will direct OSHA & other relevant agencies to develop comprehensive strategies for addressing the most dangerous hazards workers encounter in the workplace.
