If that’s who we really are, we must reject today’s violence, turn the page, and move forward together—honoring our Constitution, remaining committed to a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

The match was lit by Donald Trump and his most ardent enablers, including many in Congress, to overturn the results of an election he lost.   The election was free, the count was fair, the result is final. We must complete the peaceful transfer of power our Constitution mandates.

My thanks for a wonderful tribute to my friend Governor Bill Winter, what kind of a man he was, and what he stood for.

With the passing of Governor William F. Winter, Mississippi has lost one of its greatest champions of equality, reconciliation, and progress; and I have lost a friend, an inspiration, and one of the finest people I’ve ever known.

He was an excellent DNC Chair who helped our candidates win up and down the ballot, even in places that weren’t Democratic strongholds. To the very end, he was cheering them on. I’ll always be grateful for his friendship, wise counsel, and support.

Over the course of his legendary career, Charley Pride moved millions and changed country music forever. I’ll always be grateful for his songs and his personal kindness, and especially for performing at my first White House Christmas tree lighting ceremony 27 years ago this week.

On this Human Rights Day - as repressive regimes crack down, as people flee from violent conflict, and the pandemic exacerbates threats - we must remember our shared responsibility to one another. And we must commit to standing up for the rights of others, at home and abroad.

Tina Flournoy is incredibly smart, strong, and skillful, with deeply rooted values. She’s done a wonderful job as my chief of staff for nearly 8 years, and I will miss her—but I’m thrilled about VP-elect Harris’ choice. This is great news for our country.

David Dinkins was an extraordinary public servant who made NYC fairer, better, and stronger. He was calm on the outside, and burned with a passion for justice on the inside. Until the end, he never stopped fighting for the city he loved and celebrating its “gorgeous mosaic.”
