In working as an associate editor for the past few years, I find the “curtain was pulled back” on many aspects of the publication process. My behavior as an author and a reviewer changed because of being an editor. How you ask? 🧵

I wish I spoke more languages so I could be more helpful, but I put in my name with anyway. Hopefully they will have something for me to do. Meanwhile, I will continue supporting local businesses here in Oakland's Chinatown.

Thinking a lot about this woman today. This is my child's great-grandmother. She died in the firebombing of Tokyo. Her teenage daughter, Yoshie, lost track of her parents that night and in a panic, she ran towards the beach. 1/

Hey! I'm trying to format a pre-recorded video for a Zoom session, but Zoom won't play any of the files I make. I've tried matching the video codec (H.264) and audio codec (MPED-4 AAC), but I just get "unsupported format." Halp?

Missed this from a few weeks back, but so many excellent points in this article by and colleagues on fixing the bioinformatics bottleneck, including addressing the 'goodwill gap' to align incentives w/public service:

When we did our survey of ISS, my main regret that we couldn't collect more samples. Crew time is precious, and doing anything in microgravity is slow. Now with Crew Dragon bringing more more crew, that means more science!

This powerhouse of an essay starts off with the question what do we do with R.A. Fisher's science in light of his eugenic beliefs, and ends with the idea that we can and should apply Rawl's Veil of Ignorance idea to our genes as well as our environment. Great stuff.

I have a new essay out in today: “The grossness of Fisher’s eugenic beliefs, combined with the brilliance of his scientific observations, raises the question: what do we do with the science of terrible men? This question is personal.“
