    Due to rising regional and national cases related to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Smithsonian museums, including the National Zoo, will temporarily close to the public starting Monday, Nov. 23. We are not announcing a reopening date at this time.

    Sarah Winnemucca brought visibility to the mistreatment of Native Americans in the West during an 1883 speaking tour in which she gave 300 public lectures. This portrait of her is in our new online exhibition:

    Even as we try to take in & understand the tragic news of the shooting yesterday in Boulder, CO, the Smithsonian mourns the loss of 8 people—7 of them women, 6 of whom were of Asian descent—who were killed last week when a gunman opened fire inside three spas located in Georgia.
