As the father of an emergency room doctor, I am so grateful to all the healthcare workers who keep us safe. I know my sentiments are shared across the entire Smithsonian community. Tonight, we turn some of our Smithsonian lights blue to say "thank you."

What is the best tree for wildlife in the Washington, D.C. area? Oak! In addition to generating tons of energy rich acorns for our mammals at the time they need them most, oaks host at least 5xx types of moths and caterpillars in the Washington, D.C. region!

Bees absolutely love American basswood (Tilia americana) trees. We sure hope they love the Enid A. Haupt Garden's closely related little-leaf linden (Tilia cordata) until we can get a native basswood into our gardens.

While it may not be the first (or second) choice for a formal landscape, we assure you the bees and butterflies will not mind the slightly wilder aesthetic of blackhaw viburnum.

Quite a lovely small tree if meticulously pruned, this native species fits easiest into naturalistic landscape plantings.

Did you know native serviceberries taste a lot like blueberries? Only if you beat the birds to the berries. Enough said.

While other trees begin to hibernate in the fall, witch hazels burst onto the scene with vivid yellow flowers. Witch hazels provide a late-season food source to all sorts of bug life, and shelter to birds and mammals.

Perhaps its most conspicuous characteristic is that it plays host to a number of native psyllids (otherwise known as jumping plant lice!) that cause these fascinating but totally harmless galls." - Jake Hendee, Arborist #

While the horticultural showboaters are bursting with season-long blooms or reaching to be the tallest tree on the block, the reliable hackberry stands in the background shading our streets, soaking up heavy rains, and playing host to a huge number of vital native insects.

"Common hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) is characterized by the Society of Municipal Arborists as ‘humble and hardworking’ in its assessment, the 2020 SMA Tree of the Year. I prefer to compare this tree to the venerable role of basketball’s sixth man.

Our birds depend on our native insects. The effects cascade through the food web. If we don’t have native plants and trees in our landscapes, the ecosystems we depend upon are greatly diminished.

The concept is simple. Native trees provide habitat. Our insects overwhelmingly prefer and depend upon the plants native to their habitat.

What is habitat? Habitat includes food, shelter, and a place to reproduce. A bite out of a leaf may be pest damage — or it may be a sign that a plant is providing crucial habitat to a struggling beneficial insect.
