Printer ink is a leading indicator of technological dystopia. HP went from fake security updates to block cheap ink, to renting you ink by the nanoliter, to its latest: a "free ink for life" plan, transformed into a "$0.99/month, forever, or else" plan.

Why can't you download videos from YouTube? And why does every new household appliance have a computer in it? Weirdly enough, it's the same answer.

To take youtube-dl offline, the RIAA used the same law that stops farmers, creators, and security researchers from modifying or repairing devices they bought and own, from tractors and toasters to smart speakers and smart phones.

  4. Nov 6

The makers of youtube-dl didn't infringe on anyone's copyright. They simply provided information to the public about how to perform a certain task.

Oh, HP, never change. First you tricked people with a fake "security update," that blocked cheap ink, then you invented rented ink, and now you've redefined "free ink for life" to mean "$0.99/month, forever, or else."

The pioneer HP innovated on oscilloscopes, PCs and servers, and spun all that off. Now, the husk of the company devotes its ingenuity to ripping off printer owners. Its latest innovation? "Free ink for life" that costs $1/month, forever...or else.
