It's been a big week for service awards among UDOT senior leaders, including (clockwise from top left) Kris Peterson (25 years), Rob Clayton (20), Teri Newell (20) and Lisa Wilson (25). I am grateful to have the privilege of working with so many talented, experienced colleagues.

I was so pleased to meet nine new members of Team UDOT during New Employee Orientation this week. I loved sharing with them my perspective on our vision, mission and goals, and then sending them out there to accomplish these things. They will help us keep Utah moving!

We're pleased that these new bike routes have been approved and added to the United States Bicycle Routes System. Thank you to Adventure Cycling, our partner in developing this important north/south, state-to-state route that will provide riders with more safety and protection.

Very interesting - and, I think, important - blog post on the ITS America website about the importance of collaboration and sharing as we move together into the autonomous and connected future. I loved this quote: "It's not healthy to compete on safety."

Team UDOT consists of people of sterling character. Take Burke DeGroff, for example. He showed bravery and compassion during the recent dust storm in central Utah when he comforted and helped rescue an injured boy in a horrible crash. Thank you, Burke, for your great example.

If you're heading to the Lake Powell area, please be aware of this situation on S.R. 95 near Blanding. As of this moment we're not sure how long this closure will be in place, so it would be wise to plan alternate routes and allow for more drive time.

There are lots of exits off the highway of our lifetime work, but very few on-ramps when you want to return. The Return Utah program offers a career on-ramp now. See open positions state-wide at until Aug. 1. Positions begin Sept. 7.

On a beach in Belgium 117 years ago, Louis Rigolly became the first to drive more than 100 mph. Today too many people are driving that fast & faster on our freeways, which aren't designed for those speeds. Please drive the posted speed -- save the crazy stuff for Belgian beaches.

Best retirement wishes to Jerry Hatcher, left, and Steve Lund, outstanding maintenance engineers who have given tremendous service to their states and to the nation through their work on the AASHTO Maintenance Committee. Both are men of character who made a difference. Good luck!

Once again, Utah is among the Top Ten states for infrastructure, according to CNBC's annual America's Top States for Business study. Coming in at #7, CNBC said "roads and bridges in the Beehive State are among the best in the nation." Who are we to argue?

Our Employee Advisory Council has been meeting regularly for several years. The discussions are good, with input from different perspectives. I wasn't able to attend today's meeting, but Teri Newell said it was no exception. I believe all of UDOT benefits from the work of the EAC

I was truly inspired after spending some time at The Other Side Academy this afternoon. When people are given a chance with the right opportunity in the right environment they can turn their lives around. Thank you, Dave Durocher, for your bold and courageous leadership at TOSA.

I got my day off to a good start watching on speaking about Leadership During Crisis. The Governor truly understands the need for bold leadership at such times, as has been clearly illustrated in this frank and open discussion.

UDOT has a reputation for being innovative. Foundational to innovation is research, which gives us the confidence - and the data - to explore different possibilities. Check out this video that explains in a fun way how research helps us keep Utah moving.

Teri Newell, Lisa Wilson and I had a great day in Region Three yesterday, visiting with a construction crew on US-40, the Heber maintenance crew, representatives from Wasatch County, Heber and Midvale, and the DNR. So many people doing so many good things for the people of Utah!
