Updated definition: 📉 Monitoring is for running and understanding other people's code (aka "your infrastructure") 📈 Observability is for running and understanding *your* code -- the code you write, change and ship every day; the code that solves your core business problems.

don't forget to read the blog, he is one of the best writers and communicators in the world on this topic -- the examples, the graphs, the stories .. *blows air kisses* perfection! the ideal pieces for forwarding to those o11yskeptics in your life. 😆

recently i saw that had become a honeycomb user, and the world made 5% more sense to me. 😆 i still remember seeing him give a talk on o11y back in ~2017 and going "holy shit, someone ELSE is talking about high cardinality, dimensionality, wide events? TWO of us!"

don't forget to read his post, too. it's rich with tasty little bits about software, engineering culture, and careers, but my favorite part is where he talks about developers and production. dude's gonna fit *right* in here. 😍

we don't typically sit around thinking "optimistically, i might get to feel a little torn up and heartbroken when i leave this place five years from now" 🤔 but these bittersweet feels are the best possible outcome when it comes to... nearly anything worth doing in life.

my interview with stands out for just how long he spent telling rollicking stories about how AMAZING his coworkers were and how much he LOVED his time at M$. you can treasure your time somewhere _and also_ know in your heart of hearts when it's time to graduate. 🌷☺️

Standing offer: if you are non-men/URM in tech and are negotiating salary for your next offer, I'm happy to share my entire comp history with you in DMs. Information is power.

It's all fine and dandy naming parts of your infrastructure after cute dogs, but eventually, you find yourself searching a wiki for reminders of how to "kill retrievers" and it feels so, so wrong.

I still struggle to click into work-mind when the sun is up or there's weekday buzz. I have rituals to kickstart the headspace, and they work fine. But Friday night after 8? I have to be extremely intentional to evade slipping happily away into twenty hours of hyperfocus.

It's so important to provide this kind of balanced perspective; thank you. Think of the CHILDREN!!! -- er one subset of them, whose only reliable source of intrinsic motivation comes from zestfully flinging themselves into the polar opposite of whatever they are being told to do.

    Replying to and

There was no Chef without nathan haneysmith, barry steinglass, jesse robbins, chris brown, and so many other (hundreds!) of people. That the mythology wants it to be one human, static for all time and good from the jump (I was not!) - drives me nutso.
