We should ignore java.io.tmpdir and override it with ES_TMPDIR. I think that variable should be taken into account from the beginning of startup scripts (including JavaVersionChecker) and the value should be applied as java option to all java processes.

Right now, an exception thrown during expression generation results in an uncaught exception and a blank panel without further information.

Instead, this error should be caught and rendered as a regular error like a configuration not validating properly, with appropriate data-render-error and data-render-complete attributes.
