#BehindTheScenesMW Uv-light can be an enemy of the conservator because over time uv-light can change the colours of a painting. But also a friend because it is used to detect remaining traces of the old yellowed varnish layer when it is removed. See more: http://vangogh.nl/I0YI50EQ3mb pic.twitter.com/oGPuM1h6Ub

‘My mum wasn’t a fan of Van Gogh’s paintings and I only knew the Sunflowers, but that wasn’t a painting that I liked. When I had my first guided tour of the museum, I was truly surprised: I really liked his work! I shouldn't have judged Van Gogh’s work to quickly’ wrote Aminapic.twitter.com/Le4bounU9s

#OnceUponAtimeMW This is Jo in the living room of the house on the Koninginneweg 77, Amsterdam, 1914-1915. See the paintings in the background? Can’t imagine that today, right? She kept the collection safe until our museum opened in 1973. Read more: http://vangogh.nl/W7Wp50EOpnm pic.twitter.com/IPdW9XFGJg

‘I don’t know the future, Theo – but – I do know the eternal law that everything changes. […] But doing something endures – and one doesn’t easily regret having done something. The more active the better, and I’d rather fail than sit idle’.

‘…from the people for the people’ – Van Gogh wanted to produce drawings that appealed to the lower classes, and that they could afford. He wanted to offer comfort with his art. Does his work comfort you?pic.twitter.com/jfRHEIPwp6

‘Old gold yellow landscapes — done quick quick quick and in a hurry, like the reaper who is silent under the blazing sun, concentrating on getting the job done,’ Van Gogh wrote to his friend Emile Bernard. Do you look forward to summer?pic.twitter.com/XyqdBhwK9B

Vincent had wanted to capture the stars. Once he did, he quickly wrote a letter to Theo, and enclosed a small sketch of the painting. ‘I go outside at night to paint the stars, and I always dream a painting like that, with a group of lively figures of the pals’pic.twitter.com/HjO5WrQ315

What are the lasting impressions of your first museum visit? Nigel: ‘The first museum that I visited was a natural history museum. I was at primary school at the time. I remember being completely blown away by how much larger the world was than I thought.’pic.twitter.com/BzQRA0IxdD

In 19th-century France, standardized sizes of canvas were available at art shops. However, Vincent much more commonly purchased a length from a roll, and cut it to size himself. He sometimes doubled the standard size canvases, to create a longer, panoramic view.pic.twitter.com/86TGG0jACO

‘Renew yourself, but seek this renewal in the heart of the profession’. Advice from Vincent to his younger brother Theo. Vincent himself followed his own advice throughout his career. Is it difficult for you to find the heart of your profession?pic.twitter.com/9ISrXk4Lgf

Vincent saw it as his fate that his time as an artist would be ‘without rest, constant work that’s really tiring and absorbing for the mind’. Vincent was so focused on his work that he completely exhausted himself while painting.pic.twitter.com/ABtHDWOs0V

Van Gogh's love was always deeply engaged, impassioned. He wrote: ‘I regard love – as I do friendship – not only as a feeling but chiefly as an action. [..] Where people love sincerely and in good faith, they are blessed I believe, although that doesn't dispel difficult times’.pic.twitter.com/tDYhi77kFH

‘But the colour has to do the job here [...] to be suggestive here of rest or of sleep in general. In short, looking at the painting should rest the mind, or rather, the imagination’, wrote Vincent to Theo. Do you think Vincent achieved what he was attempting in this painting?pic.twitter.com/CaozEfwTUU
