    Very alarming here from (who was complacent like me just a few days ago!) but I think one possible explanation is we aren’t doing any real surveillance testing and are just undercounting the cases.

    People don't seem to have internalized the rise in ride-hailing prices, but it is real. The only benefit of Uber and Lyft now is that they're nicer than taxis and easier to call. They are not cheaper.

    With water becoming more scarce, to the point where salt water intrusion into fresh water supplies is a clear threat to places like Sacramento and other cities, maybe building anywhere anytime is not such the best law to save water. Maybe a building moratorium is better.

    this is a common expectation that we've heard that needs to be tempered with better messaging jury's out on how we implement a fast deep equality check like that that meets folks' expectations. the closest prior art here is string interning in JS VMs, but this is trickier...

    I know a lot of y'all are invested in projects that have done this, but it's all the more reason to insist they be managed on the up-and-up. Grammars and spec proposals or it's fully proprietary and need to own it.

    1000% this. Saying "it's JS and the web!" while introducing forks to both JS and HTML syntax and semantics is dishonest, and I'm grateful for projects like Svelte that don't misdirect about this.

    by deleting features like alert() and confirm(), we effectively assert that any “mistake” in the web platform is up for debate and that we are willing to nuke it if it makes our lives easier. this is not the contract we built the web on.

    One unfortunate consequence of "computers are fast, devs are expensive" is that every end user— store clerks, receptionists, nurses— I ask complains about how slow and unpleasant their software is. But they're not the decision-makers, so nothing gets faster.
