The funny thing is I didn’t know this was literally a Alexa smart soap dispenser when I tweeted. Thought I was being funny. Woops

I will also be sharing my thoughts on how Google's approach to Pixel is changing with Pixel 6 and beyond.

Some personal news: says I am permitted to rant about Google branding on Alphabet Scoop this week, so that is a thing I will be doing.

Like if in 5 years the major engineering problem Google is solving with its custom SoC has something to do with batteries and then they rename it to "Google Electron".

Google Tensor is such a weird name for the SoC... it feels similar to "Pixel Visual Core" which eventually had to become "Pixel Neural Core" because the name had to be updated to reflect its evolving selling point. This feels like it might become vulnerable to the same issue.

Sometimes you just have to face market realities. I'm excited to try out the Pixel 6 and see just how well it stands up to the top-of-the-line Samsung flagships. But I think there's a sea change here: that comparison is going to the one of primary relevance from here on out.

But sometimes you come face to face with market realities, and last year was the perfect opportunity for the Pixel team to regroup and consider what they're really trying to do here. Clearly, the path forward became Make Pixel Android Again. And that's fine!

I thrived on the frustration of longstanding Android people, every single time a new Pixel launched, when Google decided to buck yet another Android flagship design trend. Maybe I'm just a contrarian, but I saw the vision and I loved the Pixel 4.

That makes sense for a company as large as Google, and to me, it was what made covering the Pixel for so many years so exciting. I never really loved the iPhone, and I never really loved the typical Android flagships. Pixel was something new that had smart people behind it.

Google wanted to tread their own path. If you walked into a Verizon store, you saw the three choices: Samsung, Google, and Apple. To do so, they tried to build a phone that was just Google and set aside preconceived Android notions. After 5 iterations, it didn't work.

Google is finally admitting the Pixel is an Android phone that can't exist outside the longstanding Android/iPhone dichotomy. Can't break into Apple's market share in the US? There's only one alternative: Break into Samsung's.

Hm, I’ve been thinking about this a lot today and am not sure what Google thinks is the path breaking the Samsung/Apple duopoly. They’ve clearly regrouped. What’s the plan?
