One of my favorite tools in the DevRel toolkit is the Empathy Session. Sitting down the whole team and trying to use your own product without any of your internal resources is amazing and humbling.

I first joined an empathy session w/ & not long after I started at Google. I'm hooked now. It's one of the most fun parts of my job, & a foolproof way to not only find improvement areas for a product, but also motivate them.

Incorporating Customer Empathy into our development has had a huge impact - and helped us build better products. I was fortunate enough to lead one of these sessions with , who's been a tireless champion of this program.

Love the discussions of the differences between tech career ladders and many other careers. Many careers, you do JOB and you do that job for 30 years. In tech, there's a lot of movement. Job levels, titles, companies.

talking about wanting to ultimately help people in his career/life - YES! I realized early on that feeling like I was helping people drove me. And I've been loud about that and let it guide my career path.

I was mentoring a new cs degree college grad recently and taking a look at their resume I was like, "this stuff is great, but I know you have way more." and they said "yeah but it's not tech-related." Work is work! Skills are skills! You're not starting from scratch!

Another important point that I always emphasize to my mentees - your past experiences are valuable. Teachers, theater stage managers, fast food joint workers - you're building your skills no matter what you're doing. You gotta think creatively about how they fit in a new context.

I'm checking out 's Twitter space on career transitions and appreciating the current discussion about the huge variety of roles in tech. Docs, ops, coding, teaching - there are so many roles that require so many different types of skills.
