  1. This contribution sheds an intersectional feminist perspective on the European Commission’s (EC) New Pact on Migration and Asylum. By engaging with the definitory and conceptual unclarities as to who the Pact defines as “especially vulnerable groups” and according to which criteria, it critically examines some of the gendered and racialized notions about migrants embedded in and institutionalized through the Pact. By illustrating how the EC has little understanding of what being “vulnerable” means, what implications the uncritical adoption of this term can have and what consequences respective measures can have for migrants, this paper makes a relevant contribution to ongoing debates with regard to the EU’s future migration and border politics.

  6. 2021 is set to be the deadliest year for trans and gender-diverse people since we began collecting data, with 375 registered murders between 1 October 2020 and 30 September 2021. This represents a 7% increase from the 2020 update, which was already a 6% increase from the 2019 update. Brazil remains the country that reported the majority of the murders (125), followed by Mexico (65) and the United States (53). The data shows that a total of 4042 trans and gender-diverse people reported being murdered between 1 January 2008 and 30 September 2021.

  7. 🟢📢 Call for Papers | 7th Populism Conference "Current in & Change", 16-17 May 2022, organised by & . ✍️🏽 Apply by 31 January 2022 to populism@fsv.cuni.cz! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Call for papers | 7th Prague Populism Conference: Current Populism in Europe and Climate Change

Climate change and populism are two major and intertwined phenomena in contemporary politics in Europe. Recent environmental events such as the floods in Germany and Belgium or the wildfires in Greece reinforced the importance of climate issues in political narratives, policymaking, and the behaviour of politicians in Europe. The goal of this conference is to analyse European populist parties and movements and their approach towards climate change from different angles: How have the parties adapted their narratives? Is there a new focus of their political programmes regarding environment? Where do populists stand now in relation to mainstream parties and the media in this issue? Is climate change going to substitute migration and gender as the main topic in „cultural wars“? Case studies from various European countries will provide a basis for the discussion.

  9. The EU Dublin III-return system risks jeopardizing the transfer safeguards for LGBTIQ+ refugees and asylum seekers within the EU. This symposium examines the challenges the EU Dublin III-return system creates for LGBTIQ+ asylum claimants – particularly considering the increasingly politically motivated homo- and transphobia in some EU member states – and seeks to amplify best practices for the protection of LGBTIQ+ identifying asylum claimants within the EU.

How are rights-based protections enshrined within the European Charter of Human Rights (ECHR) and that apply to LGBTIQ+ refugees and asylum seekers living in EU reception countries uphold in the context of Dublin III? How should human rights standards be guaranteed within national and local legal frameworks and practices?

agreed on "efforts towards the phasedown of unabated coal power and phase-out of inefficient fossil fuel subsidies" - here's what the "unabated" (CCS) actually means and why it is a false solution - we need to phase out all fossil fuels!

⚡️ (2/3): The EU is very keen on a transition. Despite growing concerns about the likely footprint of H2 produced from fossil , many policymakers fully back “blue” & “grey” . ✍️🏼 :

The hydrogen transition got a massive boost from the EU's newly released Fit for 55 strategy. But despite growing concerns about how dangerous the expanded carbon footprint of H2 produced from fossil gas will be, many policymakers like EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson remain firm on backing both “blue” and “grey” H2. Among many incentives in the new policy package is the shielding of this highly polluting sector from having to pay additional carbon taxes under the European Trading System (ETS). In a recent Politico Energy Visions web event sponsored by Shell, Simson batted away all criticisms, stating that during the H2 transition phase “we will need all low-carbon hydrogen solutions.” Lead blogger L. Michael Buchsbaum reviews some of the ways not-so-low H2 benefits under the bloc’s new theoretical pollution prevention plans.

"Human rights are universal and indivisible. Human freedom is also indivisible; if it is denied to anyone in the world, it is therefore denied, indirectly, to all people. This is why we cannot remain silent in the face of evil or violence; silence merely encourages them."
