Native to Eurasia, cheatgrass is an invasive species in the US. It grows faster and spreads farther than most native plants. By clearing shrubs and non-native grasses around important trees, managers hope to minimize fire risk in critical Joshua tree habitats.

Have you ever heard of cheatgrass? This month an crew has been removing cheatgrass from important Joshua tree habitat as part of a fuels reduction program. Invasive cheatgrass often leads to larger and more frequent wildland fires, which threaten Joshua trees.

The holiday season said "hello" to Joshua Tree ❄️ Tuesday's storm brought a fine layer of snow to high elevations. A fast-melting but festive reminder that the first day of winter is next week! What does winter look like where you are? Photo: NPS / Michael Faist

Yes! While Joshua Tree is home to many venomous species, you can only find one poisonous vertebrate: the red-spotted toad. Their parotoid (poison) glands aren't enough to threaten humans—but they nonetheless helps defend these tiny, unique, desert-dwelling amphibians!

Does Joshua Tree have any poisonous animals? (Remember: Venomous = dangerous when they bite you. Poisonous = dangerous when you bite them.)

Are you coming to Joshua Tree this week? Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest weekends of the year in Joshua Tree. Rangers and Volunteers (pictured here) will be on-site to help, but you can help yourself by planning ahead! "Prepare For Crowds"

This month, a crew with the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps has been hard at work in Joshua Tree. Among other projects like fuels reduction, the all-indigenous crew planted native plants to rehabilitate roadside areas that had been disturbed by OHV's. Thank you ALCC!

Pop quiz! Everybody knows that cactus spines are an excellent defense—cacti are practically the porcupines of the plant world. But these spines help with more than just defense. Do you know any other ways that spines help cacti to survive in the desert? Photo: NPS/Brad Sutton

The best hike is the one in wilderness, away from crowds. When visiting Joshua Tree on busy weeks, consider seeking out the road (or trail) less traveled. What are your favorite “off the beaten path” trails and places in Joshua Tree?
