    In the weeks that followed, we designed programs that brought the community together. We reminded Chicagoans not to give in to fear, as our nation did after Pearl Harbor, and to treat all of our neighbors with respect. As I mourn all we lost, that message resonates with me still.

    On 2001, I was still new in my role as director of the Chicago Historical Society. The skies above us, always a busy flight path, cleared as planes around the U.S. were grounded. That eerie silence, as well as the horror of those days, stays with me.
