    Dec 9 UPDATE: Since the Russian government has taken another step against internet freedom by blocking the Tor Project's website and, in some cases, blocking the network, internet freedom supporters have fought back by spinning up 200+ bridges. 💪 🌉

    It's still critical that everyone raises their voice about this censorship--and call on Roskomnadzor and the Russian government to reverse this decision.

    Roskomnadzor should immediately reverse this dangerous and self-defeating decision. Just as when they tried (and failed) to block Telegram, efforts to block won't stop criminals, but it will absolutely hurt ordinary people who depend on it for privacy. This is wrong.

    This week's Tor Browser 11.0.2 release has fresh built-in bridges so Russian users can configure their Tor Browser to "use built-in obfs4 bridges."

    Some Russian ISPs blocked public Tor relays and built-in bridges by IP address, enumerated "moat" obfs4 bridges and blocked them by IP address, and used DPI to recognize and block Snowflake connections. Other obfs4 bridges continued to work throughout.

    Roskomnadzor (Russia's censorship bureau) is attempting to block one of the most important rights-respecting networks in the world without issuing so much as a press release. This is like banning the entire cell phone network because a drug dealer used it—without explanation.

    (NEW, AS OF 7 DECEMBER) At the moment, Bridges bundled directly into Tor Browser are blocked for some users in Russia. You will need to get a working obfs4 bridge. Here's how, with instructions in Russian:
