Currently, they are stored in a comma-separated string list inside the config file, but this doesn't properly handle a number of edge cases.

The Win32 back end includes support for bundle-private fonts as documented here. This should be ported to the X11 back end as well.

This would allow site-managed generators to be written in more than C++. We already store known extensions in the Executor classes.
