    anyways - when I was working full time I regularly met many intellectually talented practitioners from Africa. I miss them. maybe that is what is most frustrating about all of this.

    anyways maybe it’s that hubris + colonial-officers-in-training vibe that put me off. Also, as you can imagine, I noticed a serious shortage of Africans both on faculty and in the syllabi.

    anyways long story short. the lecturer in this play-lecture was talking about health systems. By way of preface, they let us know that they would not be talking about the American Health System because it is *way too complex*

    another story: at PhD orientation I was the only fool who went to go see a lecture. they set it up as if it was ‘your first taste of things to come’. As if I was not already a veteran of lectures at that point, I went.

    maybe this is largely a me-problem. In my masters I found some ex-peace-corps-global-health students to have a very strange and energy-sapping saviorhood LARP vibe. Also - people liked talking about “a rural African village” and I have never been there so I was always 🤷🏿‍♂️.

    Idk about this business of paying $1.5k to hear westerners talk about how fucked up global health is usually how it goes is first the westerners pay or promise to pay for something useful only then can we say “ok what do you want to teach us now that you’ve paid for influence?”

    Has there ever been a more obvious need to critically assess & remake the field of 'global health'? This is the ambition of our Harvard course, led by Dr Paul Farmer of . I'll be teaching the online version with weekly discussion seminars. Open to all.

    Yes, we are sticking with our plan to be 100% in person for teaching - despite the high covid positive rates - but try not to be negative. Think about the great data we’ll have for studying covid! We think we might even be able to fund a new center!
