I re-simplified the index page and (for the moment) am feeling happy with it. There are 18 now!

Spatial canvas is less intuitive to users than a messaging list -- despite spatial being a possibly more intuitive way to work out ideas irl (o a whiteboard or tabletop). possibly bc we've been trained to message list or maybe bc screen is limited viewport onto canvas.

there's lots of successful messaging apps. spatial canvas category is newer. no clear winners, but lots of people trying things now

it's interesting to even try and get the categories right: - maybe chat as a category is really 'linearly ordered set of messages', in which case twitter is also chat, and email is also chat. threading is a (semi-successful attempt) to get around strict linear order limitations

cons: - more fiddly -- more potential to be distracted by 'where should I put things' - can be unclear when/where new changes have been made

Spatial canvas (sprout, whiteboard apps, figma used in a certain way) pros: - good for organizing past text blocks - good for having discussion around a specific piece of media - good for spatially breaking out into a new thread - more expressive

cons: - referring back to things earlier in the chat to have further discussion is awkward - relatedly, if you want to discuss an image or video, it gets pushed up out of view as you talk about it - less expressive - hard to group past messages

Chat vs spatial canvas (thinking in progress): Chat/messaging (slack, discord, iMessage) pros: - good for knowing who said what in what order - clear when new things have been said - because of those things it's good for async conversation

✿ home sweet homepage ✿, a comic about growing up online!

A web browser with a bubble-letter logo reading "home sweet homepage", surrounded by smiley-faced flowers and hearts. Smaller text reads "by Amy Wibowo" and "a comic about growing up online"

This is going to end with me needing to get better at regex and I don't like it.

Basically: - split on spaces and wrap all the words in spans - iterate through the spans and use getBoundingClientRect, find the first span whose top+height is greater than div height - use the index of that span to split the text - cascade the splits

Is there a dat.gui like controller component for CSS properties? Or anything where I can dump in CSS code and get a structured panel with appropriate dropdowns and inputs? (It seems like there's not, but I thought maybe there would be?)

announcing my new project: Downpour an accessible game making tool for phones there's a landing page & an email signup here: and a blog post: and here's an early screenshot:

a screenshot of a mobile app. the ui is a friendly blue colour with clicky buttons. at the top there's a bar which says "you have been transformed into a cat!". there's a photo of a drawing of a cute cat in the center, with "you are a cat" written up top and "> go bother Viv" and ">have a snooze" at the bottom. they have selections around them. at the bottom the UI have two bars. one with "Camera" "Existing" and "Gallery" buttons, and one with a delete button and a button with an image of a real cat, snoozing.
