    Two Saildrones were ~3,500 nautical miles away when the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted off the coast of Tonga on January 15. These ocean tools were able to detect an atmospheric pressure jump, capturing important data on this major eruption.

    This morning's water vapor imagery from shows a swath of dry air (yellow) across the southern U.S. To the north, moisture from a clipper system (white) is moving across the Great Lakes while another system is pushing across Mexico and the Gulf Coast.

    A second clipper will cross the northern Plains, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and Northeast through Tuesday with additional light snow which may impact travel. A storm is expected to track across the Gulf of Mexico Monday and Florida through Tuesday with gusty winds and heavy rain.

    New Seasonal Drought Outlook by ’s takes us to mid-spring. Things may get worse before getting better. Drought improves (but usually remains) in parts of the northern US. And drought develops in the central/southern US. Elsewhere...drought persists.

    It’s official. The 2020-22 Drought now solely holds the record at 69 weeks of more than 40% of the Lower 48 in drought, the longest such streak in history. Worse, 55% is in drought. Conditions may worsen before they get better.
