Something tranquil to round out Thursday: Few corals are as recognizable as beautifully spiral-shaped octocorals in genus Iridogorgia. These were imaged in 2017 in & around Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument. More from the expedition:

Photosynthesis, chemosynthesis -- what's the diff? Photosynthesis involves using sunlight to make food; chemosynthesis runs on chemical energy. Before 1977, we didn't know chemosynthetic communities existed. Imagine what else is out there to discover!

Deep-sea creatures aren't the only wildlife scientists are looking out for on expeditions! Seabirds’ unique connection to the marine environment makes them excellent indicators of ecosystem health and change.

This black guillemot, a truly Arctic bird, was seen swimming in the ocean at scientists' northern-most science station, around 77 degrees North.
The tufted puffin is known for its bright yellow tufts of feathers that both sexes have during the summer breeding season.

Here's hoping your 2022 is off to a spectacular start...kind of like this stunning jellyfish, seen while exploring "Enigma Seamount" during 2016 Deepwater Exploration of the Marianas at 3,700 m (2.2 mi) depth. Lots of good exploration stuff coming this year. Stay tuned!
