"Seen, Heard, and Paid: The New Work Rules for the Marginalized" will come out on June 7, 2022, anywhere books are sold: I would be eternally grateful if you would pick it up!

  2. ...and who gets left behind because they're not friends with so-and-so who can get their stories promoted or because their editor likes the mediocre hotshot over the hard-working woman of color. Not a sermon, just a thought!

  3. So when we debate whether or not journalists have to be on social media or whether we should spend less time here, keep a close eye on who's saying "yeah, it's just the internet turn it off" because they have the privilege to do so—either of implied safety or newsroom support...

  4. Just speaking as someone who *wrote a whole book about being marginalized at work* (Seen Heard Paid, our June 7th, preorder here: ) I promote my work and build my own audience because I've worked in places where the official channels won't!

  5. When you say "just stop using social media" you're assuming the levers and tools of your news org work equally to lift the work and voices of all of its journalists. That's a VERY big assumption! One that's provably false in most newsrooms!

  6. Hey hi, your friendly neighborhood journalist of color here reminding you that if your take on the social media and journalists convo is "everyone should just get off twitter" and you're serious, not in a "this is a hellsite" way, I encourage you to check your privilege!

“Making technology sacred feels relatively new,” says Seligman. “But if you can get into that headspace of making it sacred, it’s a really valuable resource.” Thrilled to have this piece out in WIRED today!

Apropos of The Bad Tweets from The Bad Newsletter Company, all I have to add is that whenever someone says to your face something like "We understand principles come at a cost," the *cost* is you. Your life. Your livelihood. Your safety. And they are completely okay with that.

Whenever the student loan conversation kicks up, this is where my mind goes - to immigrant kids, poor kids, and kids of color who were told their ONLY chance at success hinged on degrees they obtain. But of course, the stigmatization is the point. Good thread.

We used to “correct” kids who were left-handed - through violence, shame or “guidance” on how to be right handed. And so there seemed to be very few left handers. Then we stopped, & with no shaming there was a seemingly rapid rise. Then a plateau. This is a tweet about trans kids

Loved ’s newsletter this morning about respectability and how much journalists of color hold back parts of themselves because they don’t want or need the unconscious judgement of their white colleagues.

I could talk about this for AGES and how frustrating it is that we define Black masculinity in this extremely narrow band outside of which anything else—especially anything empathetic, emotional, or not focused on swag or demeanor is ridiculed.
