It shows that at least for some applications and use cases, acceptance is no longer a primary issue in the field of #opensource software.

Our take: It's interesting to see #opensource so trusted by IT leaders due to them evaluating open-source options on the same level as proprietary software options—and judging the open-source options as qualitatively better, particularly on #security.

It appears this increased accpetance is not due to the traditional arguments about "many eyes" creating more secure software (versus secrecy ensuring #security for proprietary software), but rather due to the inherent flexibility and quality of #opensource software generally.

Our take: The creation of parallel security certificate systems was one of the impetuses for the standardization of the TLS standard, and is inherently insecure. The strength of TLS is not just the way it works but that it's inshrined as an internet standard by the @ietf .

That is, while TLS/SSL depends on a multi-stakeholder model to ensure the reliability of certificates, the system being considered by the EU uses a less secure model, and mandates providers to adhere to it.

Our take: Whether Google decides to implement this change, it does reveal a key aspect of how the search giant thinks about web addresses—that the domain itself is what they consider the essential piece of information about a particular URL, and not subdomains or directories.

Our take: These numbers notwithstanding, not all new gTLDs have seen such low registration rates. It does beg the question, though, as to how "niche" TLDs can really break out, and what the best strategy to do so may be.
