In the museum world, we must recognize that wisdom flows from every corner of our organizations—security, maintenance, education, curatorial. We must dip into the full reservoir of that wisdom to evolve, serve our communities and nation, and shape our shared future.

When a group of museum specialists reached retirement, I remember a lunch where they turned to me and pointed out a painful reality: with their departure, the museum would become less diverse than it had been in 1964. That message stuck with me and has inspired me ever since.

The indispensable museum specialists did far more than shepherd collections around and leave research to the designated staff. Over the decades, they researched, cared for, and contributed to interpretation of the collections, getting to know them intimately.
