  6. U-M chemistry professor Anne McNeil’s focus on chemical recycling & upcycling of plastics has expanded beyond the lab. Through community cleanup days, students visit 20 metroparks located alongside the Huron River & pick up trash along the way.

“People had just felt content with how recycling is done currently. When it is collected — which isn’t that much — it’s taken to a facility, sorted and chopped up. Then, they remelt the plastic and try to make something else. But the dirty little secret of that type of recycling is that the properties of the plastic degrade because the recycled product is just a mixture of really different components.” Anne McNeil, Professor of Chemistry and Macromolecular Science and Engineering.

We know finals week can be stressful. Try some helpful tips from .

"Hydrate, eat, and take breaks as needed! When studying for exams: break down the content into groups and study it in sections and switch it up with different subjects every hour or so. As someone that used to pull frequent all-nighters, I have learned that the time I spend studying does not always mean that I have retained the information, so take breaks and make sure to stretch and move around as you work!" A study by U-M Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics found that smartwatches can help you track the symptoms of and other diseases at home when medical resources are scarce, such as during a pandemic.

“We found that COVID dampened biological timekeeping signals, changed how your heart rate responds to activity, altered basal heart rate, and caused stress signals. What we realized was knowledge of physiology, how the body works, and mathematics can help us get more information from these wearables.” Daniel Forger Professor of Mathematics & Research Professor of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics
