This is a valid question!!!! WHY?!?!?!?!!

Why do Nashville’s tourists feel the need to cosplay farmers and cowboys when they visit our city? I don’t dress up like a bagel or the Statue of Liberty when I visit New York City. I just wear my normal clothes.

Professionals who consistently interrupt the days of others by unscheduled calls and unnecessary "urgent" tasks are not productive. They cannot possibly be productive.

This convo w/ Dr. Harris was so clutch. While I am a proud #HBCU alum & I lead a group focused on HBCU Success, I am not educating the next generation of leaders. To really engage with these schools effectively, we must study their histories + get clear on where they’re going.

Without the contributions of #HBCUs, America would be less of a nation, says @abcedu1924 President Forrest Harris. A new episode of #OntheYard with @ashnorthington drops on Wednesday.  #OnTheYard #HBCUPride #ABCStrong

What says about #DEI being the fabric of #PBIs & #HBCUs is right. Last yr, I witnessed two #diversity professionals at #PWIs argue about whether #HBCUs had to focus on #equity or #inclusion. They concluded not + I’ve been on a mission to prove otherwise since.

"Meeting a person where they are and helping to create the conditions of success for them in a very customized way, is really what diversity, equity and inclusion is all about." Hear more from @MartinU1977 President Sean Huddleston in a new episode of #OnTheYard this Wednesday.

Nashville can build a great #transit system, and I intend to. We have so many partners representing communities who know how important this is for access and affordability. Please come join them. #TransitTogether

It's been 5 years since Nashville's transit referendum in 2018. So much has changed--except growth in population and jobs, a worsening affordability crisis, and our woefully low investments in #publictransit.

But, collective tiredness doesn’t mean we look the other way when someone in our community needs additional support and direction. It’s not a failure admitting mistakes. It’s only a failure when we actively allow them to persist.

And unfortunately, because we absolutely do live in a world where everyone and everything is NOT treated equally nor equitably, we do have to champion lots of causes. And that can be absolutely exhausting. I get that. I feel that.

We also can’t allow the real pains of racism and discrimination to distract us from doing what we know is right, from controlling the controllables, and from playing to win whatever hand we’ve been dealt - no matter if we didn’t get the full deck of cards like everyone else.

We can decide that we don’t have to call them out (or in). We can decide that we still want to support them. But I think it’s disingenuous to publicly and loudly rally against one type of wrongness and simultaneously embrace another - just because we love them.

But when our beloved’s wrongness hurts us or comes dangerously close to hurting us, I think we have an obligation to take a hard look at the situation. We owe it to ourselves to decide if we want to lovingly call in (or out) the beloved’s actions. Facts and truth are owed to us.

We rally for them to have the benefit of doubt & when others (Black or otherwise) call out the wrongness, we immediately point our finger at those of other races who are doing wrong, too, seemingly like we don’t want right, we only want the space and grace to be wrong like them.

So, when a Black person - most especially one that is revered or connected to something we collectively hold dear - does something wrong or shady or is not upholding the standard of excellence (work twice as hard…), we fight for them to have the grace our ancestors were denied.

That’s the quick and dirty recap for now. I expect all hell to break loose tmrw. I predict lots of grandstanding on FB, misinformation spread, & passionate opinions from folks who haven’t read any of the reports and/or have never had the responsibility of significant leadership.

TSU said it’s fixed the issues stemming from the October 2022 audit report, has new enrollment software, a plan to prevent a housing crisis repeat, and has established a new office to manage student and parent concerns. It’s also working with a PR firm to strengthen its comms.

In THEC’s response, it notes that actually placing TSU back under TBR governance would create multiple issues. It also asks comptroller to present the findings as those that require systemic changes and those that are minor changes.

February 2023: The state comptroller publishes its findings. Among several considerations, it says TSU could go back into TBR governance (highly unlikely) and it’s administration and board could be replaced.

November 2022: Turns out the housing crisis was exacerbated by a huge increase in scholarship funding. The TSU Board approved one scholarship plan. But the board was not notified of the scholarship plan increase until November. The board approves the plan retroactively.
