What matters is how we respond to challenges. Adversity, like education, can instill empathy and inspire action. I urge you to use what you've learned to help make America a better place, one that embodies its loftiest principles and lives up to its most cherished ideals.

As you enter post-college life, you will find that your lives will require a nimbleness that would have been unimaginable for your grandparents. You graduate at a time when the nation is scarred by racial and social injustice, images of war, climate crisis, and pandemic.

Congratulations to the graduating class of 2022. It was an honor to speak at the commencement. As a college student, I believed that after graduation the clouds would part. My future would be clear ahead. I was wrong. Life unfolds in ways you can’t conceive of.

Hughes channels the tired yet strong voice of a mother speaking to her child. She describes her life as a hard climb up torn, splintered stairs. She instructs her son to continue the climb: "So boy, don’t you turn back. Don’t you set down on the steps."

In William H. Johnson's "Young Mother," a gently cradled baby rests. But the mother’s eyes are wide—with worry, exhaustion, or hopes that her child's future will be brighter than her own. From the collection of , it reminds me of "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes.

So many nights, my educator parents stayed up late to prepare lessons. They bought supplies with their own money and worked long hours to help students catch up. Teachers are the engine of possibility in American life and we at Smithsonian are honored to serve and support them.

This building, like the Smithsonian, reflects both the wonders and the reality of American life. While it's unclear what role enslaved people played in its construction, we know D.C. would look markedly different today were it not for Black labor.

While the medieval revival red sandstone building seemed out of place as it rose on some of Washington's most revered land, it cemented this place as a site of learning and possibility. Our commitment to the people of the world continues to be strong 175 years later.

In May 1847, "a day of public rejoicing" followed the laying of the cornerstone of the Smithsonian Castle. It was an honor as the 14th Secretary to join friends and colleagues, such as Under Secretary for Museums and Culture Kevin Gover, to reenact this moment.
