Remember, Apple also won't allow other browsers to bring better UI for this either, because they self-preference regarding web app installation. Only Safari is allowed, and it's nowhere near up to scratch.

Installing a Web App on Android and Installing a Web App on iOS are worlds apart 🫤 Apple benefits from making Web Apps impossible for normal users to discover. Regulators must step in to fix this anti-competitive behaviour.

A screenshot of the Android Web App Install prompt, with image previews and a description. Looks as good as what can be seen in the AppStore.

However Google, although better than Apple, still does not provide the ability for third party browsers to properly Install Web Apps despite having promised the functionality YEARS ago.

I am a developer of another browser on Android, can I have this seamless install process?

Thanks to all web developers who took the time & trouble to reply to CMA's consultations. Big Tech firms have whole departments who leap into action if regulators start sniffing, and the money to set up pseudo-associations to lobby on their behalf. We didn't; you had our backs.

“Browsers are one of the most important and widely used apps on mobile devices. Most people use their browser at least daily to access online content such as information, news, videos and shopping. 97% of all mobile web browsing in the UK in 2021 happens on browsers powered by either Apple’s or Google’s browser engine, so any restrictions on these engines can have a major impact on users’ experiences”

“Web developers have complained that Apple’s restrictions, combined with suggested underinvestment in its browser technology, lead to added costs and frustration as they have to deal with bugs and glitches when building web pages, and have no choice but to create bespoke mobile apps when a website might be sufficient.”

I hope @SamsungUK get their act together, because customers deserve better. I don't believe in rewarding (several) bad experiences with tech support. @madebygoogle make a pixel foldable already!
