Today, for the first time, Biden's domestic policy chief Susan Rice addressed how she missed the rise of migrant child labor in the US. It came as she announced her resignation. “We were never informed of any kind of systematic problem,” she said in an exclusive interview.

In 2021, as unaccompanied children were sleeping on detention center floors under foil blankets, Rice vented her frustration in a handwritten note. “This is BS,” she wrote. “What is leading to ‘voluntary’ separation is our generosity to UCs!”

This isn't about paring back child labor protections around the edges. The GOP bills let 14 and 15-year-olds take on overnight shifts and dangerous assembly line jobs. Work that has been banned for children for a century.

In three separate hearings yesterday, Congress grilled Biden officials on how they missed the migrant child labor crisis. DHS Secretary Mayorkas said the administration is now taking action to end "the horrific exploitation of children."

Senior staff at HHS risked their jobs to warn the Biden administration that the rush to send migrant children to sponsors was putting kids in danger. Several say they were pushed out in retaliation. Meanwhile, the number of children being trafficked or exploited has skyrocketed.

There are reasons why some migrant children might not want to talk to US child welfare workers. But the number of kids the government has been unable to reach since 2021 is knowable. That number is more than 85,000. And the share of kids who get immediately lost is growing.

In several congressional hearings, HHS Secretary Becerra has been asked about our reporting that HHS couldn't reach 85,000 migrant children right after releasing them. He says he doesn't know where those numbers come from. For what it's worth, they're from the HHS press office.

🚨🚨 AR Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed into law this week a bill that rolls back big portions of the state’s child labor protections. The law eliminates requirements for the state to verify the age of children under 16 before they take a job.
