Gluing fabric or similar material to a hat frame is done using milliner's glue. This article sets out the basics of this procedure.
edit Steps
- 1Obtain milliner's glue and a small paintbrush. The paintbrush should be of good quality and kept for this purpose alone.
- 2Cover the surface of the hat frame where the fabric is to be applied with glue. Allow to stand about five minutes.
- 3Apply another coat of glue to the hat frame. Firmly smooth the fabric over the freshly glued surface.
- 4Press and smooth one small area at a time.
- 5Be sure material has adhered to frame on each space glued, before going on to the next space.
- 6Dry. When all material has been glued to frame, allow to dry thoroughly.
edit Tips
- When gluing any kind of fabrics together, put the glue on both pieces of fabric and press glued sides together.
- It is wise to first test materials to be glued. Cut a small piece of elastic net and apply glue, then cut a small piece of material to be glued and smooth material over glued elastic net. Let dry. If material will not take glue, spots will appear on sample when dry.
