Hey Illustrator is a great program. It offers so much versatility in creating vector images. Hence why it is the top vector program out there. As a beginner to this program I want to share with you a tutorial that is simple to follow that you can use to draw Homer Simpson of The Simpsons. It is really easy to do but it does take a long while if you want to get it correct and good looking. What we would hopefully be working towards is something shown on the right. That image is lifted directly out of I had made. All the included colours will be given although you can download the swatches from the source file if you want to load them directly. If you want to see any of the image screen shots full size please click on them. Step 1 is simple create for canvas and suitably name it. A size under 800 x 600 is perfect because the source file we will be working on isn't the best of quality. Remember to save the file once as you click OK. You don't want to lose all of your work because you didn't save your file. You next need to create a layer for the background image that we are going to trace. Rename the existing layer (If you need your layer palette up go Window > Layers) and naming it something useful (and spelled correctly (D'Oh)). The next step is to lock the layer by checking the tick box. Locking the layer prevents you from moving it are changing any of the attributes when working. The next step is to copy and paste or place the image below onto this layer. You can either resize it to a large size if it is to small or leave it as it is. You should have something that looks like this. When you lock the layer there will be a small pad lock by the eye. If can always click and unclick the pad lock to edit and change the layer as necessary. This will be done numerous times to different layers. The next step is to start drawing. Use the Pen tool (P) and set the stroke to about 2. Change this depending on the size of your image. One thing to remember is that a thinner line will be added on to the image later. Once you have selected the pen tool create a new layer. Name it outline. The carefully draw around the outline of Homer. Make sure that you adjust the curves as needed with the White Pointed Tool (A). Once you have spent some time carefully adjusting the image you should have a good outline. Through out the creating of this tutorial I was always going back and changing the outline to look both good and fit to the original sketch. You now need to reduce the st... |

In this tutorial I will show you how to make the tattoo flags, if you want to know how to make the flowers, go here. Start with a trapezoidal shape like this, curved at the end. Make it with the pen tool for more control. Fill = Nul, and the stroke should be black (You'll hide it in the end, anyway.) Remember, You can edit points with the white pointer tool after you've made the shape.

You might remember these flowers from the Tattoo Flags tutorial. They are simple and very aesthetic. Start with a shape like this. Draw it with the pen tool. Make the color settings like this: Fill-Null (Transparent); Stroke - black.

Creating a cartoon or human-like caricature is a fun and rewarding project to do in Illustrator. Not only that, but if you?re pretty good with the pen tool, it doesn?t take very long. In this tutorial I will be creating an elf. Be sure to look at refrences of other cartoons or caricatures to make sure your shapes are correct. To start, I drew a basic head shape.

Now, lets draw a smaller ellipse again with the ellipse tool (L) and give it a bit darker blue as color. The color code I selected was: #028FC1 but you can opt for a different one.

Apologies for the slight delay in the series, the site managed to use up all of it?s bandwidth allowance plus an extra 7gb in the last week that the hosting company kindly donated to keep the site live until November 1st. The site has now migrated to a supersize package with an American host which will hopefully mean less downtime and more bandwidth to play with each month! Back onto the monster character series; Part two covered the creation of the Dumb Blue Sucker Monster, now we'll take a look at the Angry Orange Monster! Once again, hopefully these will be easy enough to follow by Illustrator beginners, with mostly the basic tools and shapes being used. |
Before you start make sure you set your Fill color to None and Stroke color to Black or whatever color you prefer.

Ok, I lied. We're not entering the Food Service industry. But a tutorial on how to make some chicken wings would be pretty cool, none the less. This tutorial is all about how to make those really cool hyper detailed wings that all those bro-dawg brands are rocking.

This tutorial is going to show you a step by step procedure for drawing a drink glass in Illustrator CS by using mostly the pencil tool and different brush tools. This tutorial will teach you several skills such as drawing figures outlines, adding brush effects, and colouring with transparency. This is a beginner level tutorial, you are merely expected to know the very basics on how to use Illustrator. An example of the outcome of our tutorial could be seen below.

Hey I haven't done a tutorial in a while so I decided to do one for a change. This tutorial is about drawing mushroom in illustrator. Its very simple. and takes about 10 minutes. I've used Illustrator CS3, but I don't think there are any problems if you use some of the later versions. If you are ready lets begin. Step 1) The first step is to create a new canvas. It doesn't have to be massive, but make it a good size. About 500 x 500 pixels is best. Step 2) Use the ellipse path tool (L) and draw a squashed circle. Have a really thick stroke. About 10-20px depending on the size of your circle. Set the fill to nothing. All of the fills will be nothing unless stated. Step 3) Use the rounded rectangle tool to draw the body of the mushroom. Use the up and down arrows to change the curve of the corners. Step 4) Open the path finder palette (Window > Pathfinder) select the two lines, press "Add to Shape Area" and then expand. This will merge the lines and then make them into one line. You get the following shape. Tweak it using the Direct Selection Tool (A) to adjust the points if you need a better shape. Step 5) Use the pen tool and draw a curved line across the shape. The best method to complete this is to first click on the left hand side of the shape, then click on the right hand sides. Then drag the mouse with the button press down to adjust the shape. The stroke wants to be a lot less than the thick edge. Step 6) To add the eyes, select the Ellipse Tool (L) set the fill to black and the stroke none and draw the eye shape. Copy and paste for the other eye. Step 7) This is the most fun part in my opinion. Create a new layer underneath the drawing layer. This, for the uninformed, is done through the Layers palette (Windows > Layers) and then select new layer from the rows of icons at the bottom of the palette. On this new layer select the pen tool set the stroke to none and the fill to #FFFEF5. Draw points to make sure you fill in the area. It doesn't have to be precise, but it does need to be filled. Step 8) Do the same method again to produce the shadow but change the fill to #E2E2D7. Make sure you take time to make a good curve. Step 9) Using the same technique as mentioned draw around the head part of the shape. I was going to show a screen shot of this, but its white so there isn't anything the see. This step is used for when a background is added. Step 10) Draw another shadow for the head part. Use colour value #DBDBDB, this is more grey . The other shado... |

Do you like the bamboo scene on my Flash site? Well, here is the quick tutorial. This tutorial will show you how to illustrate Chinese bamboo with Illustrator Symbol Sprayer and Mesh Tool. |
Step 1: Open your Illustrator and create new document with 500px x 500px Art board setup. Make sure you select RGB color for color mode. |

In my previous tutorial I showed how to make a Christmas tree, this tutorial shows you how draw a furry Christmas hat. |
Assuming that you know how the scroll (banner) looks like, draw just one half of it (start left or right from the center). I am using the Wacom tablet and usually I use the "Pen tool", but I think that drawing with the "Path tool" is easier for those of you who use a mouse. |
Color the swirl and store it as a Brush or a Symbol. Make a small database of various shapes that will later be used for drawing Swirls Illustrations, like mine "Adobe Illustrator Swirls Symbols". |
Now I repeated the expanding of the brush strokes, deleted stray transparent lines, and merged the wing all together with the pathfinder tool. We have a wing! Now let's duplicate it and mirror it like it's shown below. |
First place a photo in Layer 1 by File > Place or Copy & Paste from clip board. Double click on Layer 1 to change the Layer Options. Set Dim Images to: 30% and lock layer. |
