  1. 1
Get the biggest tank possible. Larger tanks are easier to maintain and stock with fish. Try to go as big as your budget and free space allow you.

  2. 2
Thinking about the stocking only when it already set up and finished with the fishless cycling. You don't want to risk your fish's lives unnecessarily.
  3. 3
A general rule is 1 gallon per inch of adult fish. Exceptions are full-bodied fish, such as goldfish. For them, it's 15 gallons for the first fish and another 10 gallons for any additional fish.
  4. 4
It's always better to keep a bigger number of fish of the same species than to have just a few different fish. The fish feel more relaxed and comfortable and it's a better sight.
  5. 5
Don't mix fish that are too different in size. The bigger fish might pick on or even eat the smaller ones.
  6. 6
Think about the level the fish prefer. Buy bottom, middle and top dwelling fish.
  7. 7
Planting your tank well and doing regular partial water changes can help expanding its stocking capacity.
  8. 8
Always make sure you've done your research before buying fish. Having compatible fish minimalizes future problems.
